More About Gerolsteiner
Straight from the midst of the Vulkaneifel (Volcanic Eifel) comes Germany's most popular water: Gerolsteiner's natural mineral water. Gerolsteiner Sparkling is one of the most popular mineral water brands around the world. Its success is due to its clean and refreshing taste, which is attributed to its unique volcanic origins. Special geological circumstances to the Eifel are the reason for the unique flavor and freshness and the healthy substances contained in the water. It is taken from the deep groundwater, which is from the accumulation of many decades of rainwater, filtered and purified while seeping slowly through the layers of sediment and rock.
Due to the Volcanic Eifel's geological history, Gerolsteiner mineral water is especially rich in minerals. The water is enriched with carbonic acid, making it a naturally sparkling water. Carbonic acid allows the water to stay fresh and clear throughout centuries.
The mineral water gathers in layers of rock located up to 200 meters beneath the surface and is thus safe from environmental influences. It is pumped to the surface from 21 wells in Gerolstein and subsequently piped to the bottling facilities there. These pumping stations are electronically supervised to continuously control the wells’ water level, temperature, and mineral level.
On January 1, 1888, the mine manager Wilhelm Castendyck founded the firm Gerolsteiner Sprudel in Gerolstein. In November 1888, the water became the official water of the city and became popular because of its high amount of natural carbonic acid. In 1889 its star and lion symbol was trademarked, and by 1895, the water began exporting to Australia. Brunnen table water was used to supply water to Buckingham Palace during the reign of Queen Victoria. In 1928, the company began to export to the United States.
One liter of Gerolsteiner Sparkling mineral water provides more than one-quarter of the daily magnesium requirement with 108 mg of this valuable mineral. Gerolsteiner Sparkling even meets one-third of the daily calcium requirement with 348 mg per liter. Other mineral waters are packed with minerals, but have a salty or slightly bitter taste due to the high sodium chloride or sulfate – they just don’t have the same unique balance and so don’t offer a clean and neutral taste. It is not only the level of mineralization that is crucial, it is also the type and balance of those minerals that is important – and that is precisely where the quality of Gerolsteiner Mineral Water comes from. Owing to its unique balance of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate, Gerolsteiner has a pleasant harmonious taste without any dominant individual mineral notes. Also, thanks to its acid-neutralizing effect, bicarbonate ensures a well-balanced taste. Gerolsteiner Sparkling contains at least 1,800 mg of bicarbonate per liter.
